Staatsoper, Hamburg November 1985 concert poster

Original first printing concert poster advertising American jazz musician, trumpeter, bandleader, and composer Miles Davis (1926–1991) at the Staats Oper in Hamburg [Germany] on Thursday, 7th November, 1985, presented by Fabrik in cooperation with the Hamburgischen Staatsoper. The concert in Hamburg was part of Miles’ Fall 1985 European tour in support of You’re Under Arrest – an album produced by pianist Robert Irving III and released in April 1985 on Columbia Records. The album saw Miles mix pop tunes with political statements about racism, pollution and war. Among other tracks, the album features Davis’ interpretations of two contemporary pop songs, “Time After Time” by Cyndi Lauper and Michael Jackson’s “Human Nature”. During the recording sessions, which took place at the Record Plant Studio in New York, bass player Darryl Jones introduced Sting to his longtime idol Miles Davis. Sting was startled when Davis asked him if he could speak French, and since he did, Miles asked him to translate the Miranda warning into French and yell it into the microphone against a backing track. You’re Under Arrest marked the ending of Davis’s 30-year association with Columbia Records, although the label released the 1984 recording Aura in 1989, and would release many archival recordings in later years.

The poster measures 59.4 x 83.9 cm (approx. 23.4″ by 33″ inches) and is beautifully printed on thin coated paper stock. In excellent condition, clean and unfolded. Feel free to email us with any questions you may have concerning this item. Additional images of the poster available on request.
