November 1952 French concert tour program

Scarce original vintage concert program for “The Queen of Gospel” Mahalia Jackson’s November 1952 tour of France. After winning an award in 1952 from the French Academy of Music for her record, “I Can Put My Trust in Jesus,” Mahalia decided to travel to Europe for the first time, visiting France, Holland, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden and England. Singing to capacity audiences everywhere, she was called “The Angel of Peace,” and not only were her concerts a huge success, the European fans even ordered fifty thousand copies of her song “Silent Night.” In Paris she received 21 curtain calls and the crowds were so big the police were called in to maintain control. However, exhaustion was taking its toll. When she fainted on stage in France, the European tour had to be cut short, and Mahalia decided to return to Chicago for treatment.

In original uncoated pictorial wrappers, staple bound, 18.0 x 27.0 cm, 8 pp. All text in French. Program notes by Hugues Panassié. In excellent unmarked condition, tightly bound and clean. Additional photos available on request.
