Tonhalle, Düsseldorf May 1987 concert poster

Original first printing concert poster advertising American jazz vibraphonist, pianist, percussionist, and bandleader Lionel Hampton (1908—2002) at the Tonhalle in Düsseldorf [Germany] on Thursday, 14th May, 1987, presented by René Heinersdorff. During much of the 1980s, some notable sidemen in Hampton’s orchestra included Thomas Chapin, Paul Jeffrey, Frankie Dunlop, Arvell Shaw, John Colianni, Oliver Jackson, and George Duvivier. He remained active until a stroke in Paris in 1991 led to a collapse on stage. That incident, combined with years of chronic arthritis, forced him to cut back drastically on performances. Hampton died on 31st August, 2002, aged 94, and was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in The Bronx, immediately adjacent to both Miles Davis and Duke Ellington’s graves. The poster features a photo of Hampton by German photographer Hans Harzheim, with his imprint to the bottom left corner.

The poster measures 59.4 x 83.8 cm (approx. 23.3″ by 33″ inches) and is printed in black ink on thin, smooth-finish uncoated paper stock. In excellent unfolded condition, clean and unmarked. Feel free to email us with any questions you may have concerning this item. Additional images of the poster available on request.
