Description

January/February 1970 Japanese concert tour program

Large original vintage program book lavishly produced for Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers’ nationwide Japanese tour during January and February 1970, presented by the Japan Art Center. The Jazz Messengers at the time featured tenor saxophonist Carlos Garnett, bassist Jan Arnet, pianist Joanne Brackeen, and singer Etta Jones. By the late 1960s/early 1970s, it was difficult for Blakey to maintain a steady lineup for the Messengers, and even more difficult to produce recordings. Between 1966 and 1972, the Messengers produced only a single official record, namely Jazz Messengers ’70, which was recorded on this Japanese tour.

In original illustrated textured wrappers, staple bound, 26.0 x 36.2 cm, 28 pp. All text in Japanese. Light wear to spine and extremities, else in near excellent condition, tightly bound and clean. Additional images of the program available on request.
