Congresgebouw, The Hague November 1977 concert poster

Large original first printing concert poster advertising American jazz clarinetist and big band leader Woody Herman at the Congresgebouw in The Hague [Holland] on Thursday, 3rd November, 1977, presented by the Paul Acket Agency. The show in The Hague was part of Herman’s 40th Anniversary tour as a big band leader. Over the course of a career that lasted half a century, Herman led a succession of ensembles — generally calling each one his ”Thundering Herd” — in a wide spectrum of popular music from blues to bop to rock and beyond. He would continue to perform with his Young Thundering Herds well into the 1980s, after the death of his wife and with his health in decline, chiefly to pay back taxes that were owed because of his business manager’s bookkeeping in the 1960s. Apparently Herman owed the IRS millions of dollars and was in danger of eviction from his home. Woody Herman died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles on 29th October, 1987, suffering from congestive heart failure, emphysema and pneumonia. He was 74 years old.

The poster measures 82.5 x 114.6 cm (approx.  32.5″ by 45.1″ inches) and is beautifully printed on thin, uncoated paper stock. Light sporadic edge wear to the borders, else in near excellent, unfolded condition. Additional photos available on request.
