Gaumont, Wolverhampton March 1969 concert flyer

Large original first printing concert flyer advertising American singer, songwriter, musician and record producer, Stevie Wonder at the Gaumont in Wolverhampton [England] on Thursday, 13th March, 1969, presented by Arthur Howes, and with The Foundations and The Flirtations also on the bill. By this time Wonder was riding high in the charts with the single “For Once in My Life”. Originally written and first recorded as a slow ballad, Wonder’s version an uptempo arrangement produced by Henry Cosby. Although recorded in the summer of 1967, founder of Tamla-Motown Berry Gordy did not like Wonder’s version, and the recording was shelved until October 1968, when Billie Jean Brown, the head of the Motown Quality Control department, finally coerced Gordy into allowing Wonder’s version to be released. Backed by bassist James Jamerson, drummer Uriel Jones and pianist Earl van Dyke, the single turned out to be a top-three hit in both the United States and the United Kingdom in late 1968 and early 1969.

The flyer measures 14.5 x 29.0 cm (approx. 5.7″ by 11.4″ inches) and is beautifully printed in yellow, dark blue and black inks on thin, coated paper stock. Complete with the original postal booking form still intact. Very light handling wear to the bottom border, else in near excellent unfolded condition.
