May 1963 Japanese concert tour program + ticket

Large original vintage program book lavishly produced for the Thelonious Monk Quartet’s seven-date Japanese tour during May 1963 with American jazz/blues singer Jimmy Rushing. The tour commenced with two concerts at the Sankei Hall in Tokyo on 13th and 14th May and ended at the Simin Kaikan in Sapporo on 22nd May, 1963. Monk’s quartet featured tenor saxophonist Charlie Rouse, drummer Frankie Dunlop, and bassist Butch Warren. John Ore is listed as the bassist in the program, but he had left the band prior to the Japanese tour. The album, Monk in Tokyo, released in Japan by Columbia Records as two separate LPs in 1963, was recorded on this tour. Original ticket for the concert at the Sankei Hall on 14th May, laid in.

In original pictorial coated wrappers, staple bound, 25.8 x 36.3 cm, 36 pp. All text in Japanese. Light wear to spine and extremities, else in near excellent complete condition, tightly bound and clean. Additional images of the program available on request.
