April 1963 Japanese concert tour program + ticket

Original vintage concert program produced for Lionel Hampton’s April 1963 Japanese tour. For the tour, his first to Japan, Hampton’s orchestra featured trumpeters Virgil Jones and Floyd Jones, alto saxophonist Bobby Plater, tenor saxophonist Andy McGee, alto saxophonist, flutist and oboist player Edward Pazant, bassist Lawrence Burgan, drummer Floyd Williams, trombonist Lester Robertson, and singer Pinocchio James. Hampton purposefully took an incomplete band to Japan, augmenting it with seven Japanese musicians selected through an audition. He dubbed this ‘pioneering East-West’ aggregation the Asiatic-Harlem band. “I have some trombone amd trumpet players who could easily play with anybody in the States,” Hampton said. The album Hamp in Japan was recorded on this tour. Original ticket for the concert on 27th April, laid in.

In original pictorial coated wrappers, staple bound, 21.0 x 21.0 cm, 24 pp. All text in Japanese. In excellent complete condition, tightly bound and clean. Feel free to email us with any questions you may have concerning this item. Additional images of the program available on request.
