Berlin, Germany: Schlagzeug #9 September 1959.

Original September 1959 issue of the German jazz magazine “Schlagzeug” (trans. “drums”) with pianist John Lewis (1920—2001) on the front cover. This issue contains a two-page pictorial tribute to the late Billie Holiday called “In Memoriam Billie Holiday”, as well as the articles “Jazz in den Ardennen”, “Hanswurst oder Prophet?”, and “Der Swing wird Progressiv”. Also in this issue:  Sarah Vaughan, Gene Taylor, Art Blakey, Henry Grimes, Coleman Hawkins, Hans Koller, and more. Schlagzeug was a collectible but short-lived German jazz magazine, crammed with news, reviews, pictures and adverts. Published in Berlin during the late 1950’s.

15.1 x 21.7 mm, 36 pp. Trimmed paper wrapper, staple bound. All text in German. In excellent unmarked condition. Additional photos available on request.
