Description

Kurhaus, Scheveningen & Concertgebouw, Amsterdam May 1958 concert program

Original vintage concert program for Norman Granz’ Jazz At The Philharmonic at the Kurhaus in Scheveningen and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam on Saturday, 24th May, 1958, presented by Lou van Rees. Two performances on the same day, even in two different cities, weren’t unusual back then, although the time schedule must have been tight. The two concerts in The Netherlands were part of the seventh European tour and featured Dizzy Gillespie, Roy Eldridge, Stan Getz, Coleman Hawkins, Sonny Stitt, Lou Levy, Pete Johnson, Herb Ellis, Ray Brown, Max Bennett, Gus Johnson, and Joe Turner. Though part of the JATP entourage, Ella Fitzgerald and Oscar Peterson were noticeable absent at this concert. The reason was they were touring Europe in their own names at the same time, and had already played at Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw on Saturday, 12th April, 1958, Fitzgerald accompanied by The Lou Levy Trio, while Peterson’s trio featured Ray Brown and Herb Ellis. The program features striking artwork by David Stone Martin.

Original black and white pictorial matte-coated two-fold brochure, 18.4 x 26.0 cm. All text in Dutch. Folded twice with light wear along the fold lines. Additional images of the program available on request.
