January 1972 Japanese concert tour program & ticket stub


Original vintage program book lavishly produced for American composer, pianist and big band leader Duke Ellington’s Jan 1972 Japanese concert tour with an ensemble that consisted of Cootie Williams, Harold Johnson, Mercer Ellington, John Coles, trumpet; Chuck Connors, Malcolm Taylor, Booty Wood, trombone; Russell Procope, Harold Minerve, Norris Turney, Harold Ashby, Paul Gonsalves, Harry Carney, reeds; Joe Benjamin, acoustic double bass; and Rufus Jones, drums. Original ticket stub for the concert at the Koseinenkin Hall in Tokyo on 6th January, laid in. Duke Ellington died of lung cancer and pneumonia on 24th May, 1974, a month after his 75th birthday.

In original, pictorial matte-coated wrappers, staple bound, 25.7 x 36.4 cm, 40 pp. All text in Japanese. There is a vertical scratch to the front wrapper and light wear at spine and extremities, else near fine, tightly bound and clean. Additional photos available on request.
