Description
April 1958 German concert tour program
Original vintage concert program produced for Ella Fitzgerald and The Oscar Peterson Trio’s joint nationwide tour of Germany during April 1958, presented by Norman Granz. For the tour Fitzgerald was accompanied by The Lou Levy Trio, which besides the leader featured bassist Max Bennett and drummer Gus Johnson. Levy would accompany Fitzgerald on and off from 1957 to 1962. Oscar Peterson’s trio featured double bassist Ray Brown and guitarist Herb Ellis. Often touring with Jazz at the Philharmonic, the trio remained together from 1953 to 1958. Peterson considered the trio with Brown and Ellis “the most stimulating” and productive setting for public performances and studio recordings. When Ellis left by the end of 1958, he was replaced by drummer Ed Thigpen because Peterson felt no guitarist could compare to Ellis.
