Paulussaal, Freiburg May 1994 concert poster

Original first printing concert poster advertising American jazz pianist and composer Dave Brubeck (1920–2012) at the Paulussaal in Freiburg [Germany] on Saturday, 7th May, 1994, presented by Karsten Jahnke. For the European tour Brubeck was accompanied by drummer Randy Jones, clarinetist Bill Smith, and double bassist Jack Six. This was around the time of the recording of the Just You, Just Me album – produced by Russell Gloyd and John Snyder and released on Jack Renner and Robert Woods’ Telarc label. It was the 3rd of Brubeck’s solo works preceded by Brubeck Plays Brubeck (1956) and Plays and Plays and … (1957).  There was a 37-year gap between Plays and Plays and… and this album with Brubeck focusing on working with his quartet during that time. Brubeck writes that for this album, “… I prefer to record in the same way as I play at home …” with all of the songs on this album being first takes with no advanced editing. The exception to this is “I Understand” of which Brubeck did three takes playing each in different ways. Brubeck continued to play well into his old age, even performing as late as 2011. He died of heart failure on 5th December, 2012, in Norwalk, Connecticut, one day before his 92nd birthday. In The Daily Telegraph, music journalist Ivan Hewett wrote: “Brubeck didn’t have the réclame of some jazz musicians who lead tragic lives. He didn’t do drugs or drink. What he had was endless curiosity combined with stubbornness”, adding “His work list is astonishing, including oratorios, musicals and concertos, as well as hundreds of jazz compositions. This quiet man of jazz was truly a marvel.”

The poster measures 59.2 x 84.2 cm (approx. 23.3″ by 33.1″ inches) and is beautifully printed on thin, coated paper stock. There is a tiny closed rip to the bottom left corner, else in excellent unfolded condition. Feel free to email us with any questions you may have concerning this item. Additional images of the poster available on request.
