Kaikan Hall, Kyoto January 1970 concert poster
Original first printing concert poster advertising Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers at the Kaikan Hall in Kyoto [Japan] on Tuesday, 6th January, 1970, presented by Kyoto Music Culture. The Jazz Messengers at the time featured tenor saxophonist Carlos Garnett (1938), trumpeter Randy Brecker (1945), bassist Jan Arnet (1934–2017), pianist Joanne Brackeen (1938), and singer Etta Jones (1928–2001). Art Blakey was considered in the top echelon that included such drummers as Max Roach and Buddy Rich. Described as “the volcano” of be-bop drummers by Dizzy Gillespie, he continued performing and touring with the Jazz Messengers through the end of the 1980s. His final performances were in July 1990. He died on 16th October, 1990, of lung cancer, aged 71. He was inducted into the Down Beat Jazz Hall of Fame in 1981, the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998 and 2001, and was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005. He was inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 1991. The poster features a photo by Hans Harzheim, with his imprint to the lower left side.
The poster measures 51.4 x 76.7 cm (approx. 20.2″ by 30.2″ inches) and is beautifully printed in blue, red, and black inks on thin, smooth-finish uncoated paper stock.
