Description

Mid-1970s Japanese Atlantic/Warner-Pioneer Corporation promo poster

Original first printing Charles Mingus (1922–1979) promotional poster issued by Atlantic Records/Warner-Pioneer Corporation in Japan in the mid-1970s, presumably somewhere between Mingus Moves (1974) and Changes Two (1975). By the mid-1970s, Mingus was suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. His once formidable bass technique declined until he could no longer play the instrument. He continued composing, however, and supervised a number of recordings before his death. At the time of his death, he was working with Joni Mitchell on an album eventually titled Mingus, which included lyrics added by Mitchell to his compositions, including “Goodbye Prok Pie Hat”. The album also featured Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, and Jaco Pastorius. Mingus died on 5th January, 1979, aged 56, in Cuerhavaca, Mexico, where he had traveled for treatment and convalescence. For what it’s worth, Pioneer established the Warner Bros.-Pioneer Corporation with Warner Bros. Records and Watanabe Productions on 11th November, 1970, and became a new Japanese distributor of Warner Bros. Records releases. In 1972 they changed their name to Warner-Pioneer Corporation and extended their distribution to catalogs of Atlantic Records, Reprise Records, Elektra Records, and Asylum Records, along with other labels owned by WEA. The poster was for promotional purposes only, and was never made commercially available.

The poster measures 72.7 x 51.4 cm (approx. 28.6″ by 20.2″ inches) and is beautifully printed on thin, coated paper stock. In excellent unfolded condition with minimal sporadic edge wear. Feel free to email us with any questions you may have concerning this item. Additional images of the poster available on request.
