Sporthalle, Cologne December 1980 concert poster

Original first printing concert poster advertising American singer, songwriter, musician and activist Joan Baez at the Sporthalle in Cologne [Germany] on Tuesday, 2nd December, 1980, presented by Lippmann+Rau. Baez was touring Europe in support of the Honest Lullaby album, produced by Barry Beckett and released in July 1979. The album would be her final album on CBS Records’ Portrait imprint, and her last new studio album released in the US until 1987. The autobiographical title song was written for her son, Gabriel Harris, and was performed on The Muppet Show in 1980. In addition to her own compositions, the album contained work by Janis Ian and Jackson Browne. In her 1987 memoir, And a Voice to Sing With, Baez speculated that she was likely dropped from CBS due to a political disagreement she’d had with the label’s then-president. Baez dedicated the album to the memory of journalist John L. Wasserman, who had died the previous February. Wasserman had written the liner notes to Baez’s 1977 compilation, The Best of Joan C. Baez. Also in 1980, Baez was given honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degrees by Antioch University and Rutgers University for her political activism and the “universality of her music”. Ever the humanitarian, Baez waived her fee for the concert in Cologne, which went to the Somalia Development Foundation.

The poster measures 59.8 x 83.9 cm (approx. 23.5″ by 33″ inches) and is beautifully printed on thin, coated paper stock. In excellent unfolded and unmarked condition. Feel free to email us with any questions you may have concerning this item. Additional images of the poster available on request.
