Jahrhunderthalle, Frankfurt November 1971 concert poster (Kieser)
Original first printing concert poster advertising The Giants of Jazz at the Jahrhunderthalle in Frankfurt [Germany] on Monday, 8th November, 1971, presented by George Wein in cooperation with Lippmann+Rau. Billed as “The First Family of Bebop”, The Giants of Jazz was a supergroup conceived by promoter George Wein, and featured trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, saxophonist Sonny Stitt, trombonist Kai Winding, pianist Theolonious Monk, bassist Al McKibbon, and drummer Art Blakey. Wein wrote in his memoir, Myself Among Others: “From the start I had envisioned a band featuring Dizzy Gillespie and Thelonious Monk. I had also hoped to include Sonny Rollins, J.J. Johnson, Ray Brown and Max Roach. But for various reasons, some financial, these artists were unavailable. So I approached Sonny Stitt, Kai Winding, Al McKibbon and Art Blakey—and a band was born.” The poster features striking typographical artwork by Günther Kieser, with his imprint to the center of the right side border.
The poster measures 59.8 x 83.9 cm (approx. 23.5″ by 33″ inches) and is beautifully printed in black ink on thin, smooth-finish uncoated paper stock. Light edge wear to the bottom right corner, else in remarkably near excellent unfolded condition. Feel free to email us with any questions you may have concerning this item.
