Tonhalle, Düsseldorf March 1987 concert poster (Paul-Helmut Zrocke)

Original first printing concert poster advertising American jazz saxophonist, clarinetist, composer and arranger Gerry Mulligan (1927—1996) at the Tonhalle in Düsseldorf [Germany] on Wednesday, 4th March, 1987, presented by Karsten Jahnke in cooperation with René Heinersdorff. His group for the tour featured pianist Bill Mays, bassist Dean Johnson, and drummer Butch Miles. Immediately prior to the European tour, Mulligan had recorded Symphonic Dreams – an album recorded live with his quartet (Bill Mays, Dean Johnson, and Rich DeRosa) and the Houston Symphony conducted by Erich Kunzel at the Music Hall in Houston, Texas without an audience present. Mulligan’s final recording was a quartet album (with guests), Dragonfly, recorded in the summer of 1995 and released on the Telarc label. Mulligan gave his final performance on 9th November, 1995. He died in Darien, Connecticut, on 20th January, 1996, at the age of 68, following complications from knee surgery. His widow Franca – to whom he had been married since 1976 – said he had also been suffering from liver cancer. Upon Mulligan’s death, his library and numerous personal effects (including a gold-plated Conn baritone saxophone) were given to the Library of Congress. ‘The Gerry Mulligan Collection’ is open to registered public researchers in the library’s Performing Arts Research Center. The poster features artwork by graphic artist Paul-Helmut Zrocke, with his imprint to the bottom right corner.

Printed by F. Bahruth, Reinbek, with the printer’s imprint to the bottom right corner. The poster measures 59.4 x 84.0 cm (approx. 23.4″ by 33.1″ inches) and is printed in black ink on thin, dull-coated paper stock. In excellent unfolded and unmarked condition.
