Sankei Hall, Tokyo July 1976 concert flyer

Original first printing concert flyer advertising Charles Mingus at the Sankei Hall in Tokyo [Japan] on Thursday, 29th July, 1976. For the Japanese tour Mingus was accompanied by tenor saxophonist Ricky Ford, trumpeter Jack Walrath, pianist Danny Mixon, and drummer Dannie Richmond. By the mid-1970s, Mingus was suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. His once formidable bass technique declined until he could no longer play the instrument. He continued composing, however, and supervised a number of recordings before his death. At the time of his death, he was working with Joni Mitchell on an album eventually titled Mingus, which included lyrics added by Mitchell to his compositions, including “Goodbye Prok Pie Hat”. The album also featured Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, and Jaco Pastorius. Mingus died on 5th January, 1979, aged 56, in Cuerhavaca, Mexico, where he had traveled for treatment and convalescence.

The flyer measures 25.9 x 18.1 cm (approx. 10.2″ by 7.1″ inches) and is beautifully printed on thin, coated paper stock. There is a tape mark to the center of the left side border, else in excellent unfolded condition. Feel free to email us with any questions you may have concerning this item. Additional images of the flyer available on request.
