October 1959 UK concert tour program
Original vintage concert program for American jazz trombonist and bandleader Kid Ory’s October 1959 nationwide tour of Great Britain, presented by Harold Davison and Norman Granz, and with Terry Lightfoot and His New Orleans Jazzmen also on the bill. Accompanied by trumpeter Henry “Red” Allen (1908—1967), clarinetist Bob McCracken (1904—1972), pianist Cedric Haywood (1914—1969), drummer Alton Redd (1904—1979), and bassist Squire Gersh (1913—1983), this was Ory’s first visit to Great Britain. The full itinerary for the 14-date tour was as follows: Regal, Cambridge (16th Oct), Gaumont State, Kilburn (17th Oct), Guildhall, Portsmouth (7th Oct), Town Hall, Birmingham (19th Oct), City Hall, Newcastle (20th Oct), City Hall, Sheffield (21st Oct), De Montfort Hall, Leicester (22nd Oct), The Dome, Brighton (23rd Oct), Free Trade Hall, Manchester (24th Oct), Empire, Liverpool (25th Oct), St. Andrew’s Hall, Glasgow (26th Oct), St. George’s Hall, Bradford (27th Oct), Colston Hall, Bristol (30th Oct), and New Victoria Theatre, London (31 Oct). At the concert in Glasgow on 26th October, Terry Lightfoot was replaced by The Clyde Valley Stompers. The program has been authentically signed by Edward “Kid” Ory on the front wrapper and by Henry “Red” Allen inside the program.
In original red and black pictorial uncoated wrappers, staple bound, 21.0 x 26.8 cm, 20 pp. Program notes by James Asman. In excellent condition, tightly bound and clean. Additional images of the program available on request.
