Grugahalle, Essen February 1987 concert poster
Original first printing concert poster advertising American jazz and R&B singer Al Jarreau (1940–2017) at the Grugahalle in Essen [Germany] on Wednesday, 4th February, 1987, presented by Lippmann+Rau in cooperation with HPS Promotion, and with American alto saxophonist David Sanborn as special guest. This was the second time Jarreau was touring Germany within the space of only six months, still in support of the L Is for Lover album – his eighth studio album, produced by Nile Rodgers, and released on 8th September, 1986 by Warner Bros. Records. Featuring the singles “L Is for Lover”, “Tell Me What I Gotta Do”, and “Give a Little More Lovin'”, the album peaked at #30 on the Billboard Top Soul Albums chart, #9 on the Traditional Jazz Albums chart, and #17 on the Contemporary Jazz Albums chart. Not a commercial hit, producer Nile Rodgers later called it “the best thing I ever made that didn’t sell”.
The poster measures 59.8 x 83.5 cm (approx. 23.5″ by 32.9″ inches) and is beautifully printed on thin coated paper stock. In excellent unfolded condition, clean and unmarked.
