October 1978 Japanese concert tour program
Large original vintage concert program lavishly produced for English rock group Gillan’s October 1978 Japanese tour, presented by Udo Artists, Inc. The 5-date tour commenced at the Shibuya Public Hall in Tokyo on 17th October, and ended at the Welfare Pension Hall in Tokyo on 23rd October, 1978. Following his 1977 run, Ian Gillan’s 1978 Japanese tour marked a major turning point. Frustrated with the jazz-rock fusion style, Gillan dissolved the group in July 1978. He retained only keyboardist Colin Towns and formed a brand-new heavier hard rock outfit simply named Gillan. Because the new band lacked a record contract in the UK or US, they signed a deal to release their eponymous debut – frequently called The Japanese Album – exclusively in Japan, Australia, and New Zealand in September 1978. The subsequent October 1978 Japanese tour served as the official live launch for the new band. Besides Gillan himself, the new band featured keyboardist Colin Towns, bassist John McCoy, guitarist Steve Byrd, and drummer Pete Barnacle. The 1978 sets completely abandoned the jazz-fusion arrangements of the previous year. Instead, they focused on high-energy, direct hard rock that anticipated the New Wave of British heavy Metal.
