Palais des Festivals, Cannes July 1958 advertising brochure

Original vintage two-fold brochure advertising the 1958 “Festival de Jazz” staged at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes [France] from 8th to 13th July, 1958, presented and organised by Le Comité des Fêtes de la Ville d Cannes and Le Jazz-Club Français. The first day of the festival was called “Concert d’Ouverture” and featured the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Roy Eldridge, Coleman Hawkins, Don Byas, and Sammy Price. The second day was “Concert du Jazz At The Philharmonic” with Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz, Roy Eldridge, Coleman Hawkins, Don Byas, Lou Levy, et al. The third day was devoted to New Orleans jazz and was called “Concert Nouvelle-Orleans”, again with Ella Fitzgerald, but also Sidney Bechet, Albert Nicholas, Sammy Price, Pete Johnson, Claude Luter, André Reweliotty, et al. Days four and five were both labeled “Concert de Jazz Moderne” and featured the Modern Jazz Quartet, Donald Byrd, Bobby Jaspar, Bobby Timmons, Sonny Stitt, Stan Getz, Martial Solal, Dizzy Gillespie, Kenny Clarke, and Barney Wilen. The final day of the festival was “Concert de Cloture” and featured pretty much everybody except Ella Fitzgerald. The festival was recorded by the RTF, the French national public broadcasting organization.
