May 1979 Japanese concert tour program
Large original concert program produced for American new wave rock group Devo’s May 1979 Japanese tour, presented by Ongakusha. The brief 4-date tour commenced at the Festival Hall in Osaka on 22nd May, and ended at the Nippon Budokan in Tokyo on 28th May, 1979. The tour marked the band’s first visit to Japan, and took place just as they were transitioning from their raw punk origins to a highly electronic sound, actively promoting their second studio album, Duty Now for the Future. They brought their elaborate “de-evolution” performance art to the Japanese stage. They began the shows in their iconic yellow hazmat jumpsuits and robotic movements. As the set progressed, they dynamically tore the suits off to reveal black shorts, knee pads, and shoulder pads for “Jacko Homo”, later donning orange helmets for “Smart Patrol”. The shows traditionally concluded with frontman Mark Mothersbaugh transforming into his infantile alter-ego, Booji Boy, to perform “Red Eye” and “The Words Get Stuck in My Throat”. The Osaka show famously featured rowdy Japanese fans jumping on stage and briefly “stage-jacking” the performance, adding an unpredictable energy to a band known for its mechanical choreography.
