Description

Paris: Jazz Hot Numéro 11 — September-October 1936 (First Series)

Original September-October 1936 issue of French jazz monthly Jazz Hot with French author, jazz expert, co-founder and long-term leader of Le Hot Club de France Charles Delaunay (1911—1988) on the front cover. Also in this issue: Louis Armstrong, Bobby Hackett, and Charles Delaunay’s Hot Discography. Founded in Paris in March 1935 by Charles Delaunay and Hugues Panassié, Jazz Hot is the world’s oldest jazz publication. Although the American jazz magazine Down Beat was founded four months before Jazz Hot, it was not exclusively a jazz magazine at the time. Publication of Jazz Hot was interrupted during World War II, which means there are two independent series of the magazine. The pre-World War II series, often referred to as The First Series, ran from March 1935 (Issue No. 1) to July–August 1939 (Issue No. 32). The post-World War II series began in October 1945 (Issue No. 1). While the First Series was bilingual, in French and selectively in English, the postwar series was, and still is, in French only. Jazz Hot is acclaimed for having innovated scholarly jazz criticism before and after World War II. Several of its early contributors are credited for helping to intellectualize jazz journalism and to draw attention to it from fine arts establishments and institutions. Jazz Hot has played an integral role integrating jazz into a French national identity. This issue comes from the archives of German filmmaker Friedrich Pflughaupt, a close friend of Hugues Panassié.
