Rheinhalle, Düsseldorf November 1967 concert poster

Original first printing concert poster advertising the Dave Brubeck Quartet at the Rheinhalle in Düsseldorf [Germany] on Monday, 6th November, 1967, presented by Norman Granz in cooperation with Lippmann+Rau and local Düsseldorf concert promoter René Heinersdorff. This was in the final days of the so-called “Classic Quartet”, featuring Brubeck, Paul Desmond, Joe Morello, and Eugene Wright. By the end of 1967, Brubeck disbanded the quartet, allowing him more time to compose the longer, extended orchestral and choral works that were occupying his attention. The concert at the Salle Pleyel in Paris on 13th November, 1967 was recorded and released as The Last Time We Saw Paris by Columbia Records in 1968. After the quartet disbanded, Desmond took time off to pursue a sophisticated, laidback Manhattan bachelor lifestyle, reading the likes of Timothy Leary and Jack Kerouac. In 1969 he recorded a couple of albums for A&M Records under his own name, Summertime and From the Hot Afternoon. In the early 1970s he began to record for Creed Taylor’s CTI label, both as a leader and as a sideman, leading to what some critics feel is his best album from his post-Brubeck years, Pure Desmond. In 1972 he was touring Europe again with Brubeck and Gerry Mulligan, and in 1976 he played 25 shows in 25 nights with Brubeck, touring the United States by bus. Desmond died on 30th May, 1977, aged 52. Not of his heavy alcohol habit but of lung cancer, the result of his longtime heavy smoking. Never without his humor, after he was diagnosed with cancer he expressed pleasure at the health of his liver. His last concert was with Brubeck in February 1977, in New York City.

The poster measures 59.3 x 83.8 cm (approx. 23.3″ by 33″ inches) and is beautifully printed in black ink on thin, smooth-finish uncoated paper stock. In excellent unfolded condition.
