January 1954 German concert tour program
Original vintage concert program produced for the JAZZ CLUB U.S.A. package tour of Germany January 1954 featuring iconic American jazz singer Billie Holiday along with the Beryl Booker Trio, the Red Norvo Trio, and the Buddy de Franco Quartet. Presented by Horst Lippmann and accompanied by pianist Carl Drinkard, this was Billie Holiday’s first and only German tour with appearances in Hamburg (Jan 19), Berlin (Jan 20), Düsseldorf (21st Jan), Cologne (22nd Jan), Frankfurt (25th Jan), Munich (27th Jan), Stuttgart (28th Jan), and Nuremberg (29th Jan). Holiday had always dreamed of performing in Europe. The 1954 tour lasted for three weeks and besides Germany, she sang to audiences in Scandinavia, Holland, Belgium, France, Switzerland, and England. An appreciative crowd of 6,000 people greeted her at the Royal Albert Hall in London, a concert she later referred to as “the biggest thrill of my life.” The program features delicate artwork by noted graphic duo, Hans Michel & Günther Kieser.
