Tonhalle, Düsseldorf October 1986 concert poster (Harzheim)

Original first printing concert poster advertising Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers at the Tonhalle in Düsseldorf [Germany] on Thursday, 6th October, 1986, presented by René Heinersdorff. By this time, The Jazz Messengers presumably featured alto saxophonist Donald Harrison, tenor saxophonist Jean Toussaint, trumpeter Terence Blanchard, pianist Mulgrew Miller, and bassist Lonnie Plaxico. For the major part of his career, Blakey did his drumming for the Jazz Messengers, the band that came together under his leadership in the early 1950s. He was considered in the top echelon that included such drummers as Max Roach and Buddy Rich. Described  as “the volcano” of be-bop drummers by Dizzy Gillespie, Blakey continued performing and touring with the Jazz Messengers through the end of the 1980s. His final performances were in July 1990. He died on 16th October, 1990, of lung cancer, aged 71. He was inducted into the Down Beat Jazz Hall of Fame in 1981, the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998 and 2001, and was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005. He was inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 1991. The poster features a photo by Hans Harzheim, with his imprint to the lower left side.

The poster measures 83.8 x 59.3 cm (approx. 33″ by 23.3″ inches) and is beautifully printed in black ink on thin, smooth-finish uncoated paper stock. In excellent unfolded and unmarked condition. Feel free to email us with any questions you may have concerning this item. Additional images of the poster available on request.
