Description

c. 1971 Japanese MPS Records promo poster (Tadayuki Naitoh)

Large original first printing Oscar Peterson (1925–2007) promotional poster issued by MPS Records in Japan in the early 1970s, presumably around 1971. Peterson recorded for MPS Records from 1968–1971, before moving to Pablo Records in 1972. MPS Records was a German jazz record company and label founded in 1968 by Hans George Brunner-Schwer. MPS stands for “Musik Produktion Schwarzwald”. It was founded as the successor to the SABA record label and was the first German label to exclusively release jazz recordings. The label’s roster included, besides Peterson, George Duke, the Kenny Clarke/Francy Boland Big Band, Jean-Luc Ponty, Lee Konitz, Charlie Mariano, Alphonse Mouzon, Monty Alexander, Dave Pike, and others. The MPS catalog was reissued and manufactured in Japan by Teichiku Records. The poster features a photo by jazz photographer Tadayuki Naitoh, with his imprint (T. Naitoh) to the bottom right corner. The poster was for promotional purposes only, and was never made commercially available.

The poster measures 59.0 x 83.7 cm (approx. 23.2″ by 33″ inches) and is beautifully printed on thin, coated paper stock. There is a very small soft diagonal crease to the bottom left corner, else in remarkably near excellent unfolded condition. Feel free to email us with any questions you may have concerning this item. Additional images of the poster available on request.
