Juan-les-Pins, France July 1965 concert program

Original vintage concert program produced for the 6th Annual Antibes Jazz Festival held in Juan-les-Pins on the French Riviera from 24th to 30th July, 1965. Performing artists included the John Coltrane Quartet, Donald Byrd, Nina Simone, Art Farmer, the Jimmy McGriff Trio, Woody Herman and His Orchestra, Marion Williams and His Gospel Group, Stephane Grappelly, Sven Asmussen, Stuff Smith, Les Haricots Rouges, the Bruce Turner Jump Band, the Boy Edgar Big Band, and the Jef Gilson Sextet. Nina Simone, who was touring Europe for the first time, played on 24th and 25th July, on both occasions accompanied by double bassist Lisle Atkinson, guitarist and flautist Rudy Stevenson, and drummer Bobby Hamilton. Coltrane’s quartet featured pianist McCoy Tyner, drummer Elvin Jones, and bassist Jimmy Garrison. They played on 26th and 27th July, and both concerts were famously recorded by French television and released in 1988 as Live in Antibes, 1965 on the France’s Concert label. Within a few months of their Antibes performances the group’s personnel would change with only Jimmy Garrison remaining on. Tyner embarked on a career as a bandleader, while Jones led several small groups, some under the name The Elvin Jones Jazz Machine. Coltrane died of liver cancer on 17th July, 1967, aged 40.
