Théâtre Femina, Bordeaux January 1979 concert poster
Original first printing concert poster advertising American swing jazz drummer David Albert “Panama” Francis (1918—2001) at the Théâtre Femina in Bordeaux [France] on Monday, 22nd January, 1979, with tap dancer Charles “Chuck” Green (1919—1997). Billed as “Panama Francis & His Jazz Sultans”, the ensemble featured trumpeter Francis Williams, alto saxophonists Norris Turney and Howard Johnson, tenor saxophonist George Kelly, pianist Red Richards, guitarist John Smith, and bassist Bill Pemberton. The original Savoy Sultans were formed by saxophonist Al Cooper, and played at the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem from 1937 to 1946. The name Savoy Sultans was resurrected by Panama Francis in 1974 for a one-off concert, and was turned into a regular ensemble in 1979. He maintained the same instrumentation but added rhythm guitar. This group recorded for Black & Blue Records in 1979 and again with Stash Records in 1982–83.
The poster measures 39.7 x 59.4 cm (approx. 15.6″ by 23.4″ inches) and is beautifully printed in purple, red and black inks on thin, uncoated paper stock. There is slight edge wear all along the left and right side borders, else in near excellent unfolded condition with a touch of light handling wear. Additional photos available on request.
