Description
February 1976 UK concert tour program
Original concert program produced for American jazz clarinetist and big band leader Woody Herman’s February 1976 nationwide tour of Great Britain, presented by Harold Davison. The orchestra for the tour featured Bill Byrne, Jeffrey Davis, Dennis Dotson, Nelson Hatt, Bill Powers (trumpets); Dale Kirkland, James Pugh, Vaughan Wiester (trombones); Gary Anderson, John Oslawski, Salvatore Spicola, Frank Tiberi (saxophones); Lyle Mays (piano); Kerby Stewart (bass); and Steve Houghton (drums). By this time, Herman was busy conducting clinics for high school musicians, along with seminars for college players. In September 1976 Herman and His Thundering Herd made an appearance with the 86-piece Dallas Symphony Orchestra — the first time a jazz band and a symphony orchestra fused to become one musical body. And in October 1976 the city of Houston declared a special “Woody Herman Day”. The day’s activities were culminated with a concert by Herman and His Thundering Herd in the Houston Astrodome.
