Palais des Beaux-Arts, Brussels April 1954 concert program

Original vintage concert program produced for American jazz clarinetist and big band leader Woody Herman’s performance at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels [Belgium] on Sunday, 11th April, 1954, presented by Le Hot Club de Belgique. The concert in Brussels was part of Herman’s highly successful first European tour during April and May 1954 with the Third Herd. Bassist Red Kelly remembers the triumphal tour: “We weren’t used to that kind of adulation. We were treated like rock stars are today. They tried to get the buttons off of our coats and all that stuff.” The 15-man band for the tour consisted of John Howell, Reuben MacFall, Dick Collins, Al Porcino, and Bill Castagnino (trumpets); Dick Kenney, Keith Moon, and Cy Touff (trombones); Jerry Coker, Dick Hafer, Bill Perkins, and Jack Nimitz (saxophones); Charles Flores (drums); Red Kelly (bass); and Nat Pierce (piano) plus featured instrumentalist Ralph Burns and singer Dolly Houston. The program features delicate artwork by Nory Compère and has been authentically signed by Woody Herman in blue ink on the front cover.

In original orange and black pictorial, matte-coated wrappers, single staple bound, 21.5 x 27.3 cm, 8 pp. Program notes in French by Albert Brettonville. The program has been folded vertically down the middle, else in excellent condition, tightly bound and clean. Additional images of the program available on request.
