THE THREE DEGREES.

Description

May/June 1977 Japanese concert tour program + poster

Large original concert program produced for American female vocal group The Three Degrees’ May/June 1977 Japanese tour, presented by Kyodo Tokyo as part of their “Love Sounds ’77” campaign. The massive 25-date tour commenced at the Welfare Pension Hall in Tokyo on 10th May, and ended at the City Cultural Gymnasium in Yokohama on 15th June, 1977. The Japanese tour was a major victory lap for the group. Japan was one of their most passionate fanbases outside the UK and the US, largely due to their massive win at the 1974 Tokyo Music Festival. The tour cemented them as local superstars and showcased several unique features tailored exclusively for their Japanese audience. By the time the 1977 tour came around, the group’s lineup had changed. Founding member Fayette Pinkney had departed the group in 1976. The 1977 tour featured the prominent trio of Sheila Ferguson, Valerie Holiday, and Helen Scott (who had rejoined the group to replace Pinkney). This lineup carried the vocal weight of the tour, with Helen Scott notably taking center stage for special solos during these shows. The tour served as the promotional backbone for their 1977 CBS/Epic album, Standing Up for Love. Simultaneously, a highly collectible 1977 Japanese mail-order-only compilation LP was released to coincide with their arrival, featuring their Japanese hits alongside their global Philadelphia International tracks like “TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia)”. The program comes with the original folded CBS/Sony Inc. promotional poster issued with the program, which is so often missing.
