1990 Japanese CBS/Sony Inc. promotional poster for “Steel Wheels”
Original first printing Rolling Stones promotional poster issued by CBS/Sony Inc. in Japan in 1990 to promote the release of the Steel Wheels album and the band’s Japanese tour during February 1990. Produced by the Glimmer Twins with Chris Kimsey, Steel Wheels was released on 29th August, 1989 in the US and on 11th September in the UK. It was the final album of new material that the band recorded for Columbia Records. Hailed as a major comeback upon its release, Steel Wheels is notable for the patching up of the working relationship between Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, a reversion to a more classic style of music and the launching of the band’s biggest world tour to date. It is also the final full-length studio album to involve long-time bassist Bill Wyman, preceding the announcement of his departure in January 1993. Containing the hit singles “Mixed Emotions” and “Rock and a Hard Place”, the album was a huge commercial success and reached #2 on the Billboard 200. It stayed on the chart for 36 weeks and was certified 2x Platinum by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) in January 1990 for sales exceeding 2,000,000 copies in the US alone. The album reached #2 on the UK Album Chart and was certified Gold by the BPI for sales exceeding 100,000 copies. The poster features a striking photo of group credited to Dimo Safari, with the artist’s imprint to the bottom right corner. The poster was for promotional purposes only, and was never made commercially available.
The poster measures 72.6 x 51.3 cm (approx. 28.6″ by 20.2″ inches) and is beautifully printed on thin, dull-coated paper stock. In excellent unfolded and unmarked condition.
