June 1982 Japanese concert tour program

Large original vintage concert program lavishly produced for English rock group The Jam’s June 1982 Japanese tour, presented by Van Production. The 5-date tour commenced at the Welfare Pension Hall in Tokyo on 11th June, and ended at the Aichi Labor Hall in Nagoya on 17th June, 1982. The Japanese tour was a bittersweet chapter in the band’s history. It served as their third and final tour of Japan. Only a few months later, in October 1982, frontman Paul Weller would shock the music world by announcing the band was splitting up at the height of their success. The brief promotional trek was booked to support their final studio album, The Gift, which had shot straight to number one in the UK earlier that spring. By 1982, Paul Weller was deeply immersed in American soul, funk, and R&B, moving away from the band’s traditional three-piece mod-punk roots. To replicate the complex layers of The Gift, the core trio of Weller, Bruce Foxton, and Rick Buckler expanded their touring lineup. They traveled to Japan with a dedicated keyboard player and a full brass horn section, creating a much wider, brassier soul-pop sound. By the time the band returned to the UK, the internal strain and Weller’s desire to start fresh (which would manifest as The Style Council) meant the sun was quickly setting on the band, making these June performances their final farewell to their passionate Japanese fanbase.
