Teatro Sistina, Rome March 1970 concert poster (Anon.)

Original first printing concert poster advertising the Stan Getz Quartet at the Teatro Sistina in Rome [Italy] on Monday, 16th March, 1970, presented by Franco Fontana. For the European tour Getz was presumably accompanied by pianist Stanley Cowell (1941), Czech bassist Miroslav Vitous (1947), and drummer Jack DeJohnette (1942), but I haven’t been able to get this verified. Alternatively, it could also be French organist Eddy Louiss (1941—2015), Belgian guitarist René Thomas (1927—1975), and French drummer Bernard Lubat (1945), with whom Getz recorded the Dynasty live album at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London in early 1971, but that’s unlikely. Not much information anywhere about Stan Getz’ whereabouts in 1970, except that he was in Johannesburg, South Africa in April 1970 with his wife Monica, where he organized a concert at the Bantu Men’s Social Club and insisted on playing for only racially mixed audiences. The Teatro Sistina was primarily a venue for stage acting. But in 1969, playwrights and theatre directors Pietro Garinei and Sandro Giovannini entrusted promoter Franco Fontana with the task of organizing concerts at the Teatro Sistina every Monday as Monday was the theatre company’s rest day. The concerts were called “The Sistina Monday” (I Lunedi del Sistina) and featured a host of acclaimed international artists, including Miles Davis, Ray Charles, Count Basie, Joan Baez, Ella Fitzgerald, Stan Getz, Oscar Peterson, and Dizzy Gillespie.

The poster measures 31.5 x 69.5 cm (approx. 12.4 by 27.4 inches) and is printed in green and brown inks on thin, matte-coated paper stock (coated on front only). Folded thrice with light overall surface handling wear, else in remarkably near excellent condition. Feel free to email us with any questions you may have regarding this item. Additional images of the poster available on request.
