Volkshaus, Zürich March 1977 concert poster
Original first printing concert poster advertising fusion group Shakti at the Volkshaus in Zürich [Switzerland] on Friday, 25th March, 1977, presented by Good News. The concert in Zürich was part of the group’s European tour during March in support of the A Handful of Beauty album – their second album (first studio album), produced by John McLaughlin and originally released in early 1977 by Columbia Records. The album reached #168 on the Billboard 200. This was the original line-up of John McLaughlin (acoustic guitar, guitar), L. Shankar (violin, vocals), Zakir Hussain (percussion, tabla), and Vikku Vinayakram (percussion, vocals). The group came together after the dissolution of the first incarnation of the Mahavishnu Orchestra, and toured fairly extensively during the period 1975-1977. In addition to fusing Western (jazz, Celtic folk, classical music) with Eastern music, Shakti also represented a fusion of the Hindustani and Carnatic music traditions, since Hussain was from Northern India while Shankar and Vikku are from the South.
The poster measures 30.8 x 70.0 cm (approx. 12.1″ by 27.5″ inches) and is beautifully printed on thin, coated paper stock (coated on front only). In excellent condition. Neatly folded twice with hardly visible fold lines. Feel free to email us with any questions you may have concerning this item. Additional images of the poster available on request.
