Shiba Postal Savings Hall, Tokyo January 1976 concert poster

Original first printing concert poster advertising “Piano Play House” at the Shiba Postal Savings Hall in Tokyo [Japan] on Thursday, 15th and Tuesday, 27th January, 1976, featuring jazz pianists John Lewis, Marian McPartland, and Hank Jones. By 1977, McPartland had become a public advocate for women in jazz, and headlined the first Women’s Jazz Festival, which took place in Kansas City in 1978. In the late ’70s, Marian performed internationally, including appearances in Asia, Europe, South America, and across the United States. McPartland rarely used women in her combos, but she helped many young women find their feet in the jazz business such as Mary Fettig (first female musician in the Stan Kenton band) and jazz singer Susannah McCorkle. DownBeat honored McPartland with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 1994. She died on 20th August, 2013, aged 95.

The poster measures 51.5 x 72.4 cm (approx. 20.3″ by 28.5″ inches) and is beautifully printed on thin, smooth-finish uncoated paper stock. Light edge wear to the lower right side border, else in near excellent unfolded condition. Feel free to email us with any questions you may have regarding this item. Additional images of the poster available on request.
