August 1973 Japanese concert tour program

Large original vintage program book lavishly produced for American rock group Mountain’s August 1973 Japanese tour, presented by Udo Artists, Inc. The brief 5-date tour commenced at the Nippon Budokan in Tokyo on 25th August, and ended at the Postal Savings Hall in Hiroshima on 31st August, 1973.  The Japanese tour was a historic and highly unusual moment in the legacy of the band. It marked their first-ever trip to Japan and captured a very specific, short-lived iteration of the group that produced one of their famous live albums. In the summer of 1972, Mountain had actually broken up due to internal fatigue and bassist Felix Pappalardi’s severe hearing loss. However, just a year later, core members Leslie West and Pappalardi decided to resurrect the band for a lucrative 1973 tour. Because original drummer Corky Laing and keyboardist Steve Knight did not return for this stint, West and Pappalardi recruited session musicians, rhythm guitarist and keyboardist Bob Mann and drummer Allan Schwartzberg,  to fill out the sound. This four-piece lineup existed almost exclusively for this Pacific tour cycle and dissolved immediately after returning to the USA. Mountain’s third live album, Twin Peaks, was recorded during their concert in Osaka on 30th August, 1973, and was released in February 1974.
