1978 European CBS promotional poster for “52nd Street”

Original first printing Billy Joel (1949) promotional poster issued by CBS for the European market in 1978 to promote the release of the 52nd Street album – his sixth  studio album, produced by Phil Ramone, and originally released on 11th October, 1978 on Columbia Records in the United States. Containing the hit singles “My Life”, “Big Shot”, “Until the Night”, and “Honesty”, the album was a huge commercial success. It reached the #1 spot on the Billboard 200 in October 1978 and stayed on the chart for 76 weeks (8 weeks at #1 and 22 weeks in the top 10). It was certified 7x Platinum by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) in October 1994 for sales exceeding 7,000,000 copies in the US. In the UK, the album peaked at #10 and stayed on the UK Album Chart for 43 weeks. It was certified Gold by the BPI (British Phonographic Industry) in March 1979 for sales exceeding 100,000 copies in the United Kingdom alone. Robert Christgau (Xgau) gave the album a B– rating. The poster was for promotional purposes only, and was never made commercially available.

The poster measures 39.8 x 59.7 cm (approx. 15.7″ by 23.5″ inches) and is beautifully printed on thin, coated paper stock.
