Rheinhalle, Düsseldorf October 1973 concert poster (Izquierdo)

Original first printing concert poster advertising American jazz clarinetist, saxophonist and big band leader Woody Herman (1913–1987) at the Rheinhalle, Düsseldorf [Germany] on Wednesday, 31st October, 1973 presented by René Heinersdorff. Over the course of a career that lasted half a century, Herman led a succession of ensembles — generally calling each one his ”Thundering Herd” — in a wide spectrum of popular music from blues to bop to rock and beyond. He would continue to perform with his Young Thundering Herds well into the 1980s, after the death of his wife and with his health in decline, chiefly to pay back taxes that were owed because of his business manager’s bookkeeping in the 1960s. Apparently Herman owed the IRS millions of dollars and was in danger of eviction from his home. Woody Herman died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles on 29th October, 1987, suffering from congestive heart failure, emphysema and pneumonia. He was 74 years old. The poster features striking artwork by Izquierdo (from a photo by Hans Harzheim) with artist’s imprint to the bottom left side corner.

The poster measures 59.8 x 83.8 cm (approx. 23.5″ by 33″ inches) and is beautifully printed on thin, smooth-finish uncoated paper stock. In excellent unfolded condition. Feel free to email us with any questions you may have concerning this item. Additional images of the poster available on request.
