May 1975 Japanese concert tour program
Large original program book lavishly produced for American rock group Grand Funk’s May 1975 Japanese tour, presented by Udo Artists, Inc. The 5-date tour commenced at the City Public Hall in Nagoya on 18th May, and ended with two consecutive shows at the Nippon Budokan in Tokyo on 22nd & 23rd May, 1975. This was the band’s second visit to Japan following their brief 1971 debut. By this 1975 tour, the original heavy trio had expanded into a four-piece lineup with the addition of keyboardist Craig Frost, shifting their sound toward polished, commercial arena rock and massive radio hits. The 1975 live sets blended their early hard-rock stompers with the chart-topping pop-rock anthems that dominated mid-1970s radio. Performances prominently featured “We’re an American Band”, “the Loco-Motion”, and “Shinin’ On”. The band also stretched out older heavy cuts, performing intense live renditions of “Footstompin’ Music”, “I’m Your Captain (Closer to Home)”, and a cover of The Rolling Stones’ “Gimme Shelter”. The energy from this mid-1970s touring cycle directly fed into their second official double live album, Caught in the Act, which was released by Capitol Records later that same year in August 1975.
