Jahrhunderthalle, Frankfurt October 1971 concert poster (Kieser)

Exceedingly scarce original vintage first printing concert poster advertising the Miles Davis Septet’s two performances at the Jahrhunderthalle in Frankfurt [Germany] on Monday, 18th October, 1971, presented by George Wein in cooperation with Lippmann+Rau. The two shows in Frankfurt were the first stop on an extensive European tour during October and November with George Wein’s “Newport Jazz Festival in Europe.” Drummer Jack De Johnette had left Miles’ band late in the summer, and Leon “Ndugu” Chancler was hired as his replacement. Besides Chancler, the touring ensemble featured Gary Bartz (ss, as); Keith Jarrett (el-p, org); Michael Henderson (el-b); Charles Don Alias (cga, perc); and James Mtume Forman (cga, perc). By 1971, Miles had signed a contract with Columbia that paid him $100,000 a year for three years in addition to royalties. The album Live-Evil, produced by Teo Macero, was released during the European tour. The poster features iconic artwork by Günther Kieser, with his imprint to the center of the right side border. The same artwork was used for the poster advertising the 1971 Berliner Jazz Tage.
