New York: Grove Press, March 1962 [Maynard & Miles A2 b]. First printing of the first Grove Press edition of Naked Lunch. Originally published in Paris in July 1959 by Olympia Press, this complete American edition wasn’t published until 1962 because of US obscenity laws, and was substantially different from the Olympia Press edition, because it was based on an earlier 1958 manuscript. The article “the” in the title was removed for the Grove Press edition since it was never intended by the author, but added by the editors of the Olympia Press 1959 edition.
Crown octavo (8vo), 256 pp. Half black cloth and paper over boards stamped in gilt on spine. Pictorial dust jacked printed in yellow, red and black. Not price clipped. Near fine in near fine jacket. Additional photos available on request.
