Robert Schumann Saal, Düsseldorf November 1968 concert poster

Original first printing concert poster advertising English jazz trombonist and bandleader Chris Barber (1930–2021) at the Robert Schumann Saal in Düsseldorf [Germany] on Thursday, 21st November, 1968. Barber’s band at the time featured banjo player Stu Morrison, guitarist John Slaughter, bassist Jackie Flavelle, drummer Graham Burbidge, trumpeter Pat Halcox, clarinestist John Crocker, and singer Ottilie Patterson. By the early 1960s, however, Barber realised he needed a permanent blues guitarist, and set about finding one. He telephoned John Mayall, asking if he knew of any good blues guitarists; John gave Chris John Slaughter’s name. In August 1964, Slaughter joined The Chris Barber Band and, except for a break between 1978 and 1986, has been with the band ever since. In the beginning, Barber used Slaughter only on certain numbers, but gradually he was absorbed into the band for all numbers, becoming an excellent rhythm guitarist, as well as having solo spots playing the blues. His first recording sessions with Barber’s band were for the Good Morning Blues album, with guests such as Ronnie Scott, and another young musician starting out on organ, Brian Auger.

The poster measures 58.0 x 83.9 cm and is printed on thin, uncoated paper stock. Tiny rip to the center of the top border and a touch of foxing to the bottom border, else in near excellent unfolded condition. Feel free to email us with any questions you may have concerning this item. Additional images of the poster available on request.
