January 1974 Japanese concert tour program
Large original concert program produced for legendary Joan Baez’s January 1974 Japanese tour, presented by Kyodo Tokyo. The visit was unique because it wasn’t a multi-city tour. She performed just two concert dates at the Nippon Budokan in Tokyo on 11th & 12th January during her brief stopover before heading to Australia. Coming during a transitional period in her career – just before her massive 1975 crossover success with Diamonds & Rust – her stop in Japan was focused, impactful, and uniquely packaged. The two concerts in Tokyo attracted thousands of devoted Japanese fans eager to see the “Queen of Folk” in a massive arena setting. Baez’s 1974 return to Japan was a much smoother affair than her previous, highly controversial visit to the country in February 1967. During that early ’67 tour, an interpreter named Ichiro Takasaki admitted to The New York Times that he had been pressured by a man claiming to be an CIA agent to intentionally mistranslate and censor Baez’s anti-Vietnam War political statements between songs.
