Grugahalle, Essen February 1961 concert poster

Original vintage concert poster advertising legendary Louis Armstrong at the Grugahalle in Essen [Germany] on Thursday, 2nd February, 1961, presented by C. Ebner, and with an ensemble that included Billy Kyle, Trummy Young, Mort Herbert, Danny Barcelona, and Barney Bigard. Velma Middleton is announced as the vocalist on the poster, but while touring with Armstrong in Sierra Leone, she had a stroke and died on 10th February, 1961, in the Hill Station Hospital in Freetown, Sierra Leone. The tour continued with Jewel Brown replacing Middleton.

The poster measures exactly 83.2 x 59.8 cm (approx. 32.8 by 23.5 inches) and is beautifully printed in red and black inks on very thin, uncoated paper stock. A number of tiny rips to the edges, else in remarkarbly fine unfolded condition considering the poster is well over 50 years old. Additional photos available on request.
