Gotanda Postal Insurance Hall, Tokyo August 1983 concert poster

Original first printing concert poster advertising American alto saxophonist, clarinetist, bandleader, and composer Phil Woods at the Gotanda Postal Insurance Hall in Tokyo [Japan] on Friday, 5th August, 1983, accompanied by pianist Hal Galper, bassist Steve Gilmore, and drummer Bill Goodwin. With this line-up, Woods recorded the At the Vanguard live album. Recorded at the Village Vanguard in New York City on 8th October, 1982, the album was released on the Antilles label in 1983. Interestingly, the concert in Gotanda was billed as “Remember Bird”. Although Woods did not copy Charlie Parker, he was known as the “New Bird”, a nickname also given to other alto saxophone players such as Sonny Stitt and Cannonball Adderley. Woods was married to Chan Parker, the common-law wife of Charlie Parker, for seventeen years and was the stepfather to Chan’s daughter, Kim. On 4th September, 2015, he performed a tribute to Charlie Parker with Strings at the Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild and announced at the end of the show that he would be retiring. He died on 29th September, 2015, aged 83. The poster features a photo by Japanese photographer and graphic designer Katsuji Abe, with his imprint to the lower right side border.

The poster measures 51.4 x 72.7 cm (approx. 20.2″ by 28.6″ inches) and is beautifully printed on thin, coated paper stock. Some edge wear to the upper left side of the poster, else in near excellent unfolded condition. Feel free to email us with any questions you may have concerning this item. Additional images of the poster available on request.
