1967 Japanese CTI Records promo poster for “A Day in the Life”
Original first printing Wes Montgomery (1923–1968) promotional poster issued by CTI Records in Japan in 1967 to promote the release of A Day in the Life – an album, produced by Creed Taylor and released in September 1967 on A&M/CTI Records. After recording for Riverside and Verve, Montgomery signed with A&M Records in 1967. CTI Records (Creed Taylor Incorporated) was founded by Creed Taylor in 1967 and was a subsidiary of A&M before becoming independent in 1970. The label’s first album was indeed A Day in the Life by Montgomery. The album reached #1 on the Billboard Jazz album chart and #2 on the R&B chart. It also reached #13 on the Billboard 200. The single “Windy” became Montgomery’s biggest Hot 100 hit, peaking at #44. Wes Montgomery died at his home in Indianapolis on the morning of 15th June, 1968 from a heart attack. Only 45 years old at the time of his death, Montgomery had just returned from a tour with his quintet and was at the height of his fame, having attained a degree of popular acceptance that few jazz artists in that era achieved. Montgomery’s home town of Indianapolis later named a park in his honor. The poster was for promotional purposes only, and was never made commercially available.
The poster measures 51.4 x 72.5 cm (approx. 20.2″ by 28.5″ inches) and is beautifully printed on thin, smooth-finish uncoated paper stock. Light surface wear to the bottom right corner, else in excellent unfolded condition. Feel free to email us with any questions you may have concerning this item. Additional images of the poster available on request.
